Police Shootings at Racially Charged Miami ‘Urban Beach Week’
Investigation into a shootout in the streets of Miami Beach early Monday morning has begun, which ended in the death of one alleged gunman, but which also left three officers and four bystanders wounded — the latter possibly hit by stray police bullets. The incident comes as a grim conclusion to Miami’s tenth annual Urban Beach Week, a massively popular Memorial Day Weekend event that attracts racially coded criticism and police scrutiny in equal measure. More on this story here
After 5 straight years of attending, I’m never going back to Miami for Memorial Day weekend again.
“We’ve Lost Something Of Our Soul”-Michael Moore
“We’ve lost something of our soul here in this country…something that separates us from other parts, other countries where we say everybody has their day in court no matter how bad of a person, no matter what piece of scum they are, they have a right to a trial…after World War II, we just didn’t go in and put a bullet to the head of all the top Nazis. We put them on trial.”
I’ve been too busy to comment on the death of Bin Laden, but I certainly dont share the same celebratory sentiment of most Americans. I think my views are more on par with Mr. Moore’s and despite the worlds disdain for his existence he should have been brought to trial especially considering no hard evidence linking him to 9/11 has surfaced yet.
The TV set vs. Black families

Nielsen, the ratings agency, has released its latest State of the Media report showing national television-watching trends in the year 2010. The numbers are alarming. Blacks ages 18 to 49, the data show, have been TV-ing it at a record-setting pace – on average clocking in a whopping 7 hours and 12 minutes a day.

Whitewashed.

There is one African-American in the current Senate: Illinois Sen. Roland Burris, who was appointed to fill out the rest of Barack Obama’s term after he was elected president.
In the new Senate there will be zero.
All three African-American candidates are projected to lose their races: Florida’s Kendrick Meek to Marco Rubio, Georgia’s Michael Thurmond to Johnny Isakson and South Carolina’s Alvin Greene to Jim DeMint. (All three are Democrats.) Burris is retiring, and neither of the contenders to fill his seat is African-American.

Washington DC Police SUV Crashes into “Bumblebee” on the set of Transformers 3
WASHINGTON – A D.C. Police SUV was involved in a wreck at the filming of “Transformers 3″ in Washington D.C.
While the movie was filming a car chase scene on 3rd Street and Maryland Ave in southwest D.C., the police SUV collides with a yellow Chevy Camaro, which in the movie series is known as the character Bumblebee.
The police SUV was not supposed to be there and the wreck itself was not scripted.
The police officer driving the SUV is a 20-year bomb technician. He was taken to a local hospital and sustained minor injuries.
Sources tell FOX 5 that he was running to a call to 9th and F Street and was apparently using a different radio channel than the police officers who were securing the perimeter for the movie.
Statement from the Metropolitan Police Department:
“Earlier today, a MPD marked cruiser responding to an emergency assignment, collided with a vehicle involved in the filming of a movie at Third Street and Maryland Avenue, SW. The officer sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. No civilian injuries have been reported.
The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the facts of the crash and filming of this movie on closed DC city streets has been suspended until safety procedures can be reviewed.”

G.O.O.D. Music XXL Interview

Kanye is at the helm of what could be the new Hip Hop dynasty. Read the full XXL interview here.
Mos Def Signs With G.O.O.D Music
Kanye’s G.O.O.D. music roster gets deeper with the new additions of Pusha T, Charlie Wilson and CyHi Da Prynce. But in this month’s latest issue of XXL Mag, the “Monsters Inc.” article reveals his long-time compadre Mos Def has also joined aboard the G.O.O.D. Music imprint. It reads the following:
“Just as Kanye returned to his roots to scoop up Common, he recently recruited his buddy Brooklyn rapper/singer/actor Mos Def into the GOOD Music fold. Long regarded as a formidable talent by underground devotees and mainstream fans alike, Mos appeared on “Two Words” (from Kanye’s 2005 The College Dropout) and “Drunk and Hot Girls” (from KW’s 2007 Graduation). Since his 1999 solo debut, Black on Both Sides, Mos has increasingly been pushed — whether by generational choices or self-exile — to the fringes of indie, alternative hip hop. Maybe it will take Kanye to reign him in.”
This is a good look for Mos. Sounds like Kanye is trying to spear head a new hip hop movement. All he needs now is Q-Tip, Kweli and Me LOL
Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Facebook, To Give $100 Million To Newark Schools
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg will donate $100 million to help Newark public schools, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The Wall Street Journal writes,
Mr. Zuckerberg is setting up a foundation with $100 million of Facebook stock to be used to improve education in America, with the primary goal of helping Newark.
The donation has the potential to be matched by another $100 million that Newark’s mayor, Cory Booker, has been working on raising from private foundations and others. [...]
The $200 million that could be raised would amount to over 20% of Newark’s budget of $940 million.
Zuckerberg and Newark mayor Cory Booker are expected to announce the CEO’s gift on Oprah Winfrey’s show this Friday.
According to the New York Times, Zuckerberg’s donation coincides with a leadership change: “Gov. Chris Christie will cede some control of the state-run system to Mayor Cory A. Booker in conjunction with the huge gift.”
Zuckerberg grew up in Westchester, attended Harvard University, and now lives in California–so why pick Newark? Zuckerberg has “no particular connection to Newark,” says the New York Times, “But in July he and Mr. Booker met at a conference and began a continuing conversation about the mayor’s plans for the city, according to people familiar with their relationship.”
Q-Tip x Jay-Z x Kanye=Classic Material in the works.
“You know, I hate to sound self-involved but I feel like I haven’t peaked yet. I have a lot to give still. I still look the part… I still got it. I’m getting ready to work on stuff for Mary J. Blige
… Kanye and I are gonna continue to work together. We’re doing some stuff for Jay-Z’s new album that’s coming out in the spring, and then after Jay’s thing I’m gonna start recording my new album…Kanye should be working on that, too.”
U.S. Poverty Rate Hits 14.3%; 44 Million Are Poor
“The Great Recession” is causing larger demographic changes than any in history. 1 in 7 Americans are currently living in poverty. This up from 13.2 percent in 2008, with more than 3.7 million more Americans crossing the poverty threshold in the last year. The 43.6 million people living in poverty is the largest number of poor people in the United States in the 51 years that records have been kept and it’s the highest rate since 1994.
